What´s The Deal With 19?
Well, 19 is a Prime number of course, which means that it is only divisible by 1 and itself (where the result is a whole number). It’s the 8th prime number which is a fact that many number superstitious players latch on to, the number eight being seen as a particularly lucky number – especially in Asia. We are not talking scientifically, obviously. This is all superstition.
Like the fact that many see 19 as the beginning and end, as it contains the first and last single numbers; 1 and 9. Heavy, man! It is seen by many as a lucky number, as it features pretty highly in celestial observations. In particular, The moon appears in the same position with repsect to the stars every 19th year. This is the Metonic Cycle. Basically, the lunar and solar cycles match up every 19 years.
19 is the atomic number of potassium (chemical symbol K) and the final year that you can claim to be a teenager before heading in to your twenties. “19” also became a famous song- written by Paul Hardcastle, it’s a commentary on the Vietnam War- 19 was claimed to have been the average age of US GIs killed in the war in South-East Asia. Steely Dan also wrote a song called “Hey Nineteen”.
The 19th Hole refers to the bar in golf (one after the 18th hole) and the Chinese game of Go is played on a board with 19 vertical and 19 horizontal lines giving a grid of 18 rows and 18 columns (18×18 squares=324). That is why there are so many combinations. The pieces sit at the intersection of the lines, unlike in chess, which is why we talk about a 19 line board.
