Why is Eight Lucky to Some People?

Why is that? Well, the number eight is seen as a very lucky number to many people, and this is particularly true in China. That’s because the Chinese word for 8 (八 Pinyin: bā) sounds very like the word which means “prosper” or “wealth” (發).

Even in Cantonese (which is widely spoken in Southern China, e.g. in Hong Kong), the words for “eight” and “fortune” also sound alike (“baat” and “faat”). Multiple eights, as in 88, are said to be even luckier, which is why telephone numbers and licence plates containing the number 8 are highly prized in Hong Kong and can change hands for vast sums.

Don’t say the number 5 before the 8 though, as 5 sounds like “not” in Cantonese, so 58 sounds like “not lucky”. The number 3 sounds like the word for “alive” in Chinese by the way- it´s also pretty lucky out East.

Other numbers like twenty-six and seventeen are seen as lucky to some people as the add up to 8.
